Mark Angus’ stained
glass windows and panels are uncompromisingly modern, they
are colourful and expressive without historicizing. Yet they
don’t close themselves towards meaning and the contemporary
message which is relevant without being random.
For this reason he feels closest to working for churches with their multitude
and depth of cultural contents. The traditions of the stained glass artists of
the past who created spiritual spaces through light and meaning through narrative
images is carried on by Mark Angus in his own and exceptionally expressive way.
Between abstraction and figurative depictions his windows challenge interpretation
without abandoning mystery, wonder and also doubt. Returning subject matters
are the journey, transformation, the transitions and border areas of life.
Mark Angus, a border crosser himself, works in two countries, Great Britain and
Germany. He develops his designs in an extensive dialogue with his clients, with
parishes and users of buildings and spaces. He works with mouth blown flashed
glass, and uses the expressive potentials of glass painting, staining, etching,
lead line etc..
Since 1978 Mark Angus has created more than 300 windows for churches, cathedrals
as well as for other public spaces and private houses. Important examples of
recent years are two complete schemes for the churches of Oundle school and Spinkhill
near Sheffield.
Present work interests includes much more exhibition panels and paintings, the
human figure is now predominant! |
